Our Upholstery Care Guide

A piece of upholstered furniture is often the quiet heart of a room – a place to rest weary legs, to share a cup of tea, to lose yourself in a book. With gentle care, it will continue to bring comfort, character and calm for many years to come. What follows is our guide to keeping your upholstery at its very best – soft, supportive and enduringly beautiful.

A Little Everyday Kindness

As with so many things in life, a little routine goes a long way. A weekly once-over with a vacuum on a low setting, ideally using a soft brush attachment, will help keep dust, crumbs and lint at bay.

For more tactile fabrics such as velvet, an occasional sweep with a soft upholstery brush in the direction of the pile will restore its natural lustre and keep its surface looking even and inviting.

When Little Spills Happen

Life brings the occasional mishap so if a spill occurs, gently blot it with a soft, clean cloth as soon as you can. Avoid rubbing, as this can press the stain deeper into the weave. And resist the urge to add water or cleaning products, which can cause further marks or fading. If in any doubt, it’s always worth consulting a trusted upholstery cleaning specialist – they’ll know just the right approach.

Comfort That Lasts

Seat and back cushions benefit from a little movement – turning and flipping them every few weeks helps to keep their shape and encourage even settling. It’s also best to avoid perching on arms or edges, as these are more vulnerable to misshaping over time. Some of our cushions combine a firm foam core with a feather wrap, offering the best of both worlds in support and softness. They may feel rather structured at first, but with daily use (and the occasional encouraging plump), they’ll soon take on a lived-in softness that’s entirely their own.

Preserving the Beauty

Everyday awareness goes a long way in preserving your upholstery. Be mindful of zips, buckles, jewellery and pet claws, all of which can catch and snag. Take care too with dark clothing dyes, denim, in particular, which may transfer onto lighter fabrics.

To help maintain the integrity of your piece, be sure to place it on level flooring. If you need to reposition it, lift gently from each end rather than dragging. If placing your piece on hard flooring, consider adding felt pads or castor cups to protect both surface and structure. It’s a kinder approach for both the frame and your floors.

Finally, try to shield your upholstery from direct sunlight or sources of heat, which may cause premature fading.

A Word on Velvet

Velvet is, by nature, a fabric of feeling. It responds to touch – to a lean, a brush, a clasped cushion – by showing the marks of where it’s been. These pressure marks are not faults, but part of velvet’s charm. They will ease away in time, and can be gently coaxed with a little steam if preferred. None of this affects the fabric’s strength or longevity, it simply adds to its story.
